A farmers' market is the cheapest way to taste a region in an hour, and several of the best sit within striking distance of the vineyards and cider farms on this map. A few are worth a detour on their own.
The ones people travel for
Every Saturday, 9am to 2pm, around Cornhill Market Place and the streets off it. Twice named best farmers' market in the UK by FARMA, with about fifty stalls of Five Valleys produce.
Open Tuesday to Sunday. Three zones — the big producers and merchants in Three Crown Square, speciality growers in the Green Market, street food in the Kitchen.
Castle Terrace, every Saturday all year, over fifty specialists and most of them selling what they grow or rear themselves.
First Sunday of the month, March to December. Two dozen farmers' pitches plus makers, vintage and street food, and it takes over the town.
Pair one with a vineyard
This is where the map earns its keep. Stroud and Cirencester are both inside twenty minutes of two Cotswold vineyards, which is exactly the Cotswold trail under Day out.
Second and fourth Saturday, in the old Market Place, alongside the town's Monday and Friday charter markets.
Second Saturday of the month in Corn Square — and one of the few markets where cider is a named regular, which is no surprise in Herefordshire.
Every Saturday under the Victorian train shed at Green Park Station. Covered, which matters in February.
If you are in the city anyway
Mansfield Park, second and fourth Saturday, twenty-plus traders.
Not a farmers' market but a covered one dating from 1774, open daily, with over fifty independent traders.
Around 150 traders on St Peter's Street, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a dedicated local food and craft market on the second Sunday.
